Who we are

Launched on 1 August 2021, the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation is a

non-profit organisation that supports the decarbonisation of the maritime sector through pilots and trials.

GCMD is strategically located in Singapore, the world’s largest bunkering hub and busiest transshipment port.

Our mIssion

Driving towards
our mission

Our goal is to help international shipping decarbonise along a trajectory that meets or exceeds key targets, including reaching net zero around 2050. We aim to support decarbonisation across the industry through four pillars.

1

Shaping standards

We share the learnings from our projects actively at relevant national and international technical committee meetings to assist and accelerate the drafting of guidelines and standards.

2

Deploying solutions

We take a transparent, deliberate, open, and practical approach,
exercising our technical and domain expertise to curate and demonstrate viable decarbonisation solutions from end-to-end.

3

Financing projects

We are uniquely positioned to overcome roadblocks by co-funding projects, especially ones that lack immediate commercial viability or ones that may not lead to commercial returns, such as helping to establish safety standards and operating procedures to handle new fuels.

4

Fostering collaboration

We provide neutral ground for stakeholders across the value chain to convene, ensuring a diversity of inputs to operationalise pilots.

Our Approach

Adding value through pilots and trials

We prioritise real-world testing, translating 2D recommendations to 3D solutions. Our pilots and trials aim to mimic commercial conditions, ensuring that the learnings can be translated directly into knowledge to lower adoption barriers.

How we run our pilots
and trials

Transparent, deliberate, and practical – we combine academic rigour with industry realism to curate and demonstrate viable decarbonisation solutions.

Collaboration across sectors

Decarbonisation will require us all to work together. GCMD provides a neutral platform for collaboration. Our unique position allows us to bring together stakeholders in adjacent sectors, as well as nominal competitors in the same space, to address common pain points.

Agile funding + co-funding

The need for deep investments is one of the hurdles that can delay the commissioning of pilots and trials. GCMD is uniquely positioned to overcome these roadblocks by co-funding projects, especially ones that lack immediate commercial viability or ones that may not lead to commercial returns, such as helping to establish safety standards and operating procedures to handle new fuels.

Regulatory frameworks can also stall the commissioning of pilots and trials. That’s why GCMD works closely with governments and regulators to develop sandboxes for such trials.

Our partners

Founded by six industry partners namely BHP, BW Group, Eastern Pacific Shipping, Foundation Det Norske Veritas, Ocean Network Express and Seatrium, GCMD also receives funding from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) for qualifying research and development programmes and projects. Since its founding, bp, Hapag-Lloyd and NYK Line have joined as Strategic partners.

To-date, over 100 centre- and project-level partners have joined GCMD – contributing funds, expertise and in-kind support to accelerate the deployment of scalable low-carbon technologies and lowering adoption barriers.

Partnerships

Given the complexities of the maritime ecosystem and urgency of the decarbonisation agenda, collaboration across the value chain is key.
