Dear friends of GCMD,

Without a doubt, our fifth-anniversary celebration is a moment we will remember for years to come.

We poured our hearts into every detail: choosing the mementoes, watching Lynn personalise every single one, and refining the emcee script, quiz, and keynote down to the last minute. Seeing so many of you there meant the world to us. Your kind words and support reminded us why our work matters, and encouraged us to build on the past five years as we focus on building credible data and independently verifiable claims to inform investment and deployment decisions in maritime decarbonisation.

We are also excited that the Fund for Energy Efficiency Technologies (FEET) has deployed its first financing, backing two wind-assisted projects with Eastern Pacific Shipping. These projects will test how pay-as-you-save financing works in practice, linking payments to verified fuel savings. We hope this model will build investor confidence and unlock wider adoption of energy efficiency technologies.

We also published two reports. Developed with BCG, Navigating the maritime fuel transition explores how fuel economics, regulation, and fleet decisions could shape the future bunkering landscape, and includes an interactive explorer for testing scenarios. Our report on quantity assurance in marine biofuel supply chains offers a practical approach to help shipowners verify they receive the quantity and renewable content they contracted for.

As the year draws to a close, we are working towards further milestones and look forward to sharing them with you soon.

With best wishes from the communications team,

Xingti, Christine, and Claudia

GCMD’s 5th anniversary: Five years in, forward together

On 13 October, we gathered with partners and friends at PSA Horizons to mark five years of advancing maritime decarbonisation through collaboration. The evening traced GCMD’s past, present, and future, celebrating the people and partnerships behind our progress.

In a fireside chat, Mr Andreas SOHMEN-PAO, Chairman of GCMD, and Ms Ley Hoon QUAH, former Chief Executive of MPA, reflected on GCMD’s beginnings, its journey so far and the road ahead.

Our CEO, Prof Lynn LOO, then outlined GCMD’s next phase of work: strengthening confidence in maritime decarbonisation solutions through credible data and independently verifiable claims to inform investment and deployment decisions.

MPA Chief Executive Mr Wee Keong ANG closed the evening by recognising the maritime industry’s collaborative spirit and encouraged stakeholders to continue working together to address shared challenges.

Ahead of the celebration, we spoke with some partners about what working with GCMD has meant to them. We are moved—and proud—to hear testimonials on our tangible progress, from buying biofuels in bulk to helping shape regulations and guidelines at IMO.

Watch our partners share their reflection on working with GCMD.

Watch our event highlight reel here for a look back at the celebration.

Explore GCMD’s latest interactive tools

GCMD has launched two new interactive tools that allow industry stakeholders to explore different aspects of maritime decarbonisation, from future fuel demand to the potential impact of onboard carbon capture.

Maritime fuel transition explorer

Accompanying our latest report, Navigating the maritime fuel transition: How fuel economics, regulations, and fleet decisions shape the future bunkering landscape, developed jointly with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), this dashboard illustrates how different regulatory and cost assumptions influence engine adoption and how these decisions could shape future fuel demand and the global bunkering landscape through 2050.

OCCS impact calculator

Developed using learnings from Project CAPTURED, the calculator explores how operational constraints onboard a vessel can affect the amount of CO2 captured, offloaded, and ultimately mineralised, and what this operation could mean for a shipowner’s potential reduction in EU Allowances (EUA) that need to be surrendered under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
