While carbon capture and storage has been established onshore for some time, onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) has gained traction recently as a feasible approach for shipping to meet IMO revised GHG emissions reduction targets.

The case for the pilot

The GCMD–BCG Global Maritime Decarbonisation Survey revealed that 60% of respondents see OCCS as important to achieving their net-zero emissions targets. As high as 50% of the Frontrunners plan on trialling shipboard solutions by 2025.

OCCS adoption faces many hurdles, including high CAPEX for shipboard-compatible systems that need to be installed at the expense of cargo space and high OPEX owing to the need to consume additional fuel to operate the energy-intensive system.

To help close these gaps, Project REMARCCABLE aims to demonstrate end-to-end onboard carbon capture at scale.

Scope of the pilot

Phase 1: Conceptual design and front-end engineering design study (FEED) of the carbon capture system.

Phase 2: Contingent upon the successful completion of Phase 1, and with the support and endorsement of lead partners, a subsequent phase encompassing the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a prototype shipboard carbon capture system, including onshore commissioning, will be initiated.

Phase 3: Integrating the carbon capture system with the identified medium range (MR) tanker and conducting sea trials.
